Sotheby’s, the renowned auction house, is set to test the staying power of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs with a curated auction on June 18, 2024.
The centerpiece of the upcoming “bidding war” is a highly coveted Bored Ape Yacht Club with a distinctive feature – solid-gold fur.
This “2021 relic,” as described by Sotheby’s head of NFTs, boasts a unique history. It was previously owned by Three Arrows Capital (3AC)—a now-bankrupt crypto hedge fund with a significant art collection.
Additional Yuga Labs Treasures Revealed
The auction lot continues further. It includes other sought-after Yuga Labs creations, such as two gold-furred Mutant Apes and a Bored Ape Kennel Club dog NFT.
While the broader Bored Ape market has experienced a price correction, NFTs with rare traits (like gold fur) continue to command significant value. The last gold-furred Ape sold for a staggering $933,000 in March.
Sotheby’s has a proven track record of success with high-profile NFT auctions. In 2023, they facilitated the $6.2 million sale of “The Goose,” another NFT artwork previously owned by 3AC.

This upcoming auction builds upon that success story, offering collectors a chance to acquire a piece of internet history intertwined with the world of fine art.
Although Sotheby’s has yet to reveal the full details of the auction, one thing is certain: the sale will be closely watched by those interested in the intersection of NFTs and the traditional art market.
