Worldcoin has introduced its World ID verification service in Guatemala to address fraud in digital interactions. The orb technology enables Guatemalan users to confirm their identity and guard against online fraud. This launch marks Worldcoin’s expansion into Latin America.

As of September 25, 2024, individuals in Guatemala can verify their identity using the orb, a device designed to ensure the authenticity of online users. This initiative responds to rising concerns about digital fraud, driven by advanced artificial intelligence and sophisticated bots.

The introduction of World ID in Guatemala occurs amid a global issue with bots.

A recent Ipsos/TFH survey revealed that 83% of Guatemalans are concerned about distinguishing between human-generated content and bot-created content. Additionally, 88% of respondents support the development of technologies like World ID to tackle these issues.

Residents of Guatemala City aged 18 and older can access Worldcoin’s orb technology by downloading the World App and scheduling an appointment. This service aims to protect users from digital fraud and enhance transparency in online interactions. With the growing dependence on digital platforms, verifying user identities has become essential.

As we have reported on CNF about WLD, Worldcoin is expanding its global presence, having recently launched in Poland and Malaysia. The company’s efforts highlight the increasing need for reliable human verification solutions in the digital era, especially as artificial intelligence continues to advance.

Alongside the rollout in Guatemala, Worldcoin has added new features such as Face Auth, which improves security during the verification process. The company has also published a privacy white paper that outlines the protection and security measures for World ID users.

How Face Auth Works: A User-Centric Approach

Face Auth operates by comparing selfies taken on a user’s phone with the images captured during the initial registration with the Orb device. These original images are securely stored on the user’s mobile device.

Worldcoin’s team has emphasized that the entire process occurs locally on the device, which means that the new security layer allows verified World ID holders to retain control over their personal information, including the selfie. This data is encrypted with their unique key and stored only on their phone.

The verification process with World ID now functions as follows: users are prompted to take a selfie, which is then compared to the high-quality image taken during the initial verification with the Orb. If the images match, the World ID verification is successful. This method ensures that the verification process is both secure and user-centric, providing reassurance that personal data is handled responsibly.

As we previously reported on CNF, currently, this system is undergoing trials at specific locations. However, it is expected to be progressively rolled out to over 15 million World ID users in the coming weeks. This phased approach allows for thorough testing and refinement, ensuring reliability and effectiveness across its broad user base.

Currently, the price of Worldcoin (WLD) against Tether (USDT) is 2.129 USDT, which represents a 17.49% increase over the past 24 hours. Over the past week, the price has increased by 43.81%, while over the past month, it has seen an increase of 15.06%. However, over the past six months, it has seen a drop of 74.76%.
