Clearbot, founded by Hong Kong graduates, uses NVIDIA Jetson technology for autonomous, efficient waterway cleanup, tackling ocean pollution with AI-driven boats.

In an innovative leap towards sustainable environmental solutions, Clearbot, an AI-driven initiative, is making waves by autonomously cleaning waterways. The startup, co-founded by University of Hong Kong graduates Sidhant Gupta and Utkarsh Goel, employs NVIDIA Jetson technology to power their sea-cleaning boats, according to the NVIDIA Blog.

Initially conceived as a university project, Clearbot has evolved into a sophisticated prototype capable of removing up to three tons of trash daily from marine sites. The project, which began as a simple undergraduate endeavor involving makeshift materials like empty water bottles and a GoPro camera, has grown significantly. Today, it addresses a critical environmental need, particularly in tourist regions reliant on clean beaches for their economies.

Cleaning Waters With Energy-Efficient Jetson Xavier

Clearbot’s electric-powered boats, equipped with Jetson Xavier NX for efficient operations, are designed to self-dock at solar charging stations after eight-hour missions. These vessels, ranging from 10 to 16 feet in length, utilize dual cameras for navigation and waste identification, allowing them to autonomously avoid obstacles while collecting debris.

The integration of NVIDIA’s technology enables Clearbot to operate at a lower cost compared to traditional methods that often involve diesel-powered boats and large crews. This advancement not only reduces operational costs but also minimizes the carbon footprint, aligning with global efforts to tackle climate change.

Customers Harnessing Clearbot for Environmental Benefits

Clearbot’s impact extends beyond Hong Kong and India, with companies like Kingspan leveraging its technology to clean rivers and lakes in India. The initiative has successfully removed significant amounts of waste, including 1.2 tons per month in Nongstoin, India, and 15 tons from Umiam Lake in Meghalaya within three months.

Mitigating Environmental Impacts With Clearbot Data

Beyond collecting trash, Clearbot’s technology is now being utilized for broader environmental monitoring, including marine pollution control and undersea inspections. The data collected is geotagged, providing valuable insights for local governments and environmental organizations to trace and mitigate pollution sources.

This data-centric approach empowers municipalities and NGOs to make informed decisions, such as implementing bans on plastic products, by identifying and addressing pollution at its source. The comprehensive data collection facilitated by NVIDIA’s technology underscores Clearbot’s potential to drive meaningful environmental change.
