The scams allegedly include Orbiter Finance’s Discord server security breach earlier this year and the Crypto Punk 6983 NFT theft.

Identity of notorious crypto scammer uncovered

ZachXBT, a blockchain sleuth that claims to be dedicated to uncovering rug pulls and exposing bad actors in the web3 space, has revealed the identity of the notorious scammer responsible for several high-profile phishing scams in the crypto space.

In a Twitter thread posted on July 17, the researcher revealed that Soup (Dan), a Canadian hacker, has facilitated the theft of millions of dollars worth of crypto and digital assets by attacking the Discord servers of web3 projects.

ZachXBT has revealed that the said scammer orchestrated their acts by creating phony Decrypt media websites and impersonating Decrypt’s senior software engineer Luke Hamilton.

In collaboration with other scammers, Soup (Dan) approaches the team members of legit crypto projects, tricking them into joining the scam Decrypt Discord server to steal their Discord token.

Millions of dollars lost to phishing scams

While a new report by Chainalysis suggests that crypto criminals generated 77% less revenue during the first half of this year than last year, there has been a noticeable increase in impersonation scams and phishing attacks in 2023.

ZachXBT has also revealed that Soup (Dan) orchestrated the Pika Protocol Discord Server hack earlier in May, enabling the scammers to steal over $220k worth of crypto assets.  That same month, Soup and his team exploited the Orbiter Finance Discord, carting away over $760k through a fake airdrop campaign posted on the platform.

So far, Soup has managed to obtain over $1 million from their dirty game and has spent some of the proceeds of their crime on exclusive Roblox digital collectibles. ZachXBT claims to have shared additional information about Soup (Dan) with some victims “so legal action can hopefully be taken.”
