The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has delved deeper into the world of NFT art through an innovative collaboration with iconic digital artists in Web3. The significant art museum in the western United States will showcase a distinctive collection of non-fungible collectibles as a part of its “Remembrance of Things Future” initiative.
LACMA and the blockchain consultancy firm Cactoid Labs joined forces to create this innovative NFT art project. All participating artists — Deafbeef, XCOPY, Erick “Snowfro” Calderon, Jen Stark, Monica Rizzoli, Ix Shells, Emily Xie, and Sarah Zucker — were given free rein to pick works from LACMA’s permanent collection and expand on them to create something special by utilizing blockchain technology.

Deafbeef’s ‘Remembrance of Things Future’ Project
Deafbeef’s project for “Remembrance of Things Future,” drew inspiration from the renowned English photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who is famous for his pioneering photographic studies of motion and early work in motion-picture projection in the 19th century.
Similarly to Muybridge’s masterpiece “The Horse in Motion”, Deafbeef created a chronophotograph still image sequence, but differed from the original by switching each image into separate NFTs through enabling a smart contract. The on-chain technology allowed the NFT artist to create a “release shutter” function to generate a still snapchat, allowing for numerous chronophotographs to be taken from each digital asset, representing a stream of editions that can be kept, sold or traded.
The “Noumenon + Chronophotograph” NFTs also come with a catch: a time lock that doubles after each shot, expanding the digital assets’ subsequent chronophotograph to become larger and more apparent over becoming a high-resolution static image series.
While Deafbeef delves into Muybridge’s most famous masterpiece to speculate notions like “contrasting time scales”, all participants breathe a new life into traditional artworks, bringing revolutionary artistic expressions to LACMA.
