El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has stepped down from office to focus on his re-election campaign for 2024. Bukele, who is known for his pro-crypto policies, including recognizing Bitcoin as legal tender, was succeeded by Acting President Claudia Rodríguez de Guevara. Critics have raised concerns over human rights violations during Bukele’s attempts to reduce gang activity in the country. The President of El Salvador serves for a five-year term, and before September 2021, the constitution required a ten-year wait before running for re-election. However, El Salvador’s Supreme Court ruled that a president may serve two consecutive terms.
